Uganda is in the midst of difficult recovery from decades of war, the devastating impacts of HIV / AIDS pandemic, and the threat of constant internal combat and conflict. It is home to over 120,000 displaced persons, including 28,000 children, most of them orphaned or abandoned.
These children survive by traveling around, sleeping on the city streets where they feel safer from abduction, or by wandering together in nomadic groups. Kids that have been orphaned by AIDS are in even more desperate situation: they are often forsaken by all.
The Buwanda Church Orphan Home is so much more than just a shelter. Since the dedication on May 15th 2011, over twenty orphans moved into the home.
Here, often for the first time in their lives, they experience the safety, love and support, of their new “family”. They are cared for by a new “mom” – a widow from Buwanda Church congregation who lives with them. The church pastor and his family also live in the home. While his wife works as second caretaker, he also provides guidance and communicates the love of Jesus to the children. Often, only Christ’s love can heal the wounds these kids have experienced.
God has already provided for the construction cost, twenty beds, and solar panels that can partially supply power to the building. In addition, the old church building was utilized to be used as a school. But to comply with local government requirements, the teachers need to be on steady payroll, and that is still too much to carry by the Buwanda congregation. Another desperate need is water! With no well or filtration system, the caretakers have to travel daily several miles to fetch and bring water to the home. And, of course, these kids need what all kids need in addition to love and support: food, clothing and school supplies.
Would you pray about how your family, church, or small group could step in as part of this family to help support them? The Buwanda Church Orphan Home can accommodate up to 50 children; all we need is more funds to provide for them!
