To tourists, the Indonesian island of Bali is an exotic land of luxurious beaches and resorts with serene waters and picturesque tropical scenes—an ideal vacation. Bali is also a land of rich traditions, but there is also a stark reality behind this glamorous reputation. Bali is also a land of poverty and national conflict.
The 2005 Pacific tsunami earthquakes rocked Indonesia, destroying major cities and rural villages. Disasters, disease and death weakened the poor even more. The riots of East Timor caused more unrest, tearing families apart. Children languished in refugee camps and the streets, left alone to fend off the threats of danger, abduction and
malnutrition.
Now these children have a chance for a hope-filled future, to grow up in a safe home with a caring and loving family. They can laugh, have fun and be regular kids again-- and this is a hope brighter than living in a land often called a "paradise."
Though we seem a world away, they pray regularly for those who help to support their home. They understand that the support of caring and compassionate folks continues to provide their home with a shining future.
Will you join us as we care for these children?
